about

In 1995 I was invited to devise a piece for the Jugend Symphony Orchestra and my band of improvisers EUREKA. The name spanner was given to me, a nickname, which seemed appropriate as I was spending the bridge between the orchestra and improvises and myself a composer, a handy tool, for tightening and loosening these two musical machines. I managed to write the score at ruskin's farm in Normandy, France before going to Brazil in search of El Dorado. In the tiny village called Céu do Mapia, in the Amazon forest, I met the hummingbird (beija-flor) and the community residing there and was enthused to re-write the score with my post utopian ideas. I imagined how we might organise a way of playing and living together without resolving our differences.
We performed this piece in concert seven times including an unforgettable tour to Athens in Crete where Oren played the electro tuba.
The piece went through many changes as the musicians listened to each other and developed their parts.

Special thanks to all the young musicians of the Orchestra in Munster and to George for playing the banjo.

This is a Bonjour Record 08, made in 1997.
